The coat of arms of Limburg, adopted in 1996, fetaures the two mascottes of Hasselt, the provincial capital city, and Tongeren. Tongeren is the oldest town in Belgium, formerly known as Atuatica Tungrorum, the home town of Ambiorix, the Eburon King who challenged and fought Julius Caesar.
Rik Beijnsberger, 12 December 1998
The colours were taken from the arms. These colours were not fixed. Various sources give different designs, but two main sets can be compiled.
