The flag of Carmo do Rio Claro was established by municipal law no. 605 of
1969. The field is designated as sky blue (azul celeste) representing the
sky of the city reflected in Lake Furnas. The star in the upper hoist is
gold and carries the inscription 5-11-1877 (5 November 1877), the date of Carmo do Rio Claro's
municipal incorporation. The Latin phrase Fluctuat, nec mergitur (which
is also the motto of Paris) surrounding the star means "It floats, it does
not sink." The motto refers to the fact that the city was not inundated by
the building of Lake Furnas, a hydroelectric impoundment created in 1964.
