Hlinsko lies 590 metres high above sea level; the town got its name after remarkable good clay, that was found here in the past, and after bygone craftsmen who worked in this region. We can trace Hlinsko's history back to the 11th century for the first written hint at the existence of the place comes from those times. Hlinsko stands on the banks of the Chrudimka river, at the foot of the mountains of the Bohemian - Moravian Uplands. The town is situated on the fringe of the preserve areas of the ®ďárské Hills and the Iron Hills (®ďárské vrchy, ®elezné hory).
