Introduction

One of the better-known proposals for a unity flag was the black-gold-red horizontal triband proposed by O. Neubecker and E. Wolf in 1926. This design was especially impressive, as it combined the colours of black-red-gold with the pattern of black-white-red, and avoided the proximity of black and red, which is against the heraldic rule of tincture. They developed a whole set of flags from the basic design.
