Description

Red-yellow with the arms. Sources: Falko Schmidt, arms from Stadler 1964-1972. The county is on the border with Switzerland opposite Aargau. I recall seeing some red lion like the one on the Lörrach county coat-of-arms in some of Pascal Gross's Swiss flags — could there be a connection?

Stefan Schwoon, 25 March 2001

Adopted 23.09.1989, according to Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website. From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:

The arms were granted on January 29, 1957, and confirmed December 11, 1973. The lion in the upper part of the arms is the lion of the Lords of Rötteln, who had their main castle in the Wiesenthal in the county. The third quarter shows the arms of Baden, as the viscounts of Baden had large possessions around Rötteln. The wavy bend sinister in the fourth quarter represents the Wiesefluss, a small river flowing through the county.

Literature: Stadler 1964-1972.
