Description

Beneath a white square with the arms, split white-red. Frankfurt as a former imperial city bears the eagle of the Holy Roman Empire in its arms (although with changed colours). Sources: flag from Staack 1997, arms from Stadler 1964-1971

Stefan Schwoon, 19 February 2001

From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:

The arms show the imperial eagle, as the city was granted the rank of Imperial City in 1245. It is likely that the colours initially were the imperial colours. The present colours are known since around 1400. The crown was later added, as was the blue colour of claws and tongue. The arms have basically never changed since.

Literature: Stadler 1964-1971.
