Description

Another flag version of the arms, scanned and colourised (modulo some pixel hunting) from Der Flaggenkurier no. 3, 1996, p. 35. Ratio is 3:5. Rügen is the largest German island, situated close to the Baltic coast.

Stefan Schwoon, 3 February 2001

Flag adopted 07.12.1995, according to Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website. From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:

The arms were granted on January 18, 1993. The arms are derived from the 13th century arms of the Principality of Rügen, with the addition of a crown. The meaning of the old arms is not known.

Literature: Linder and Olzog 1996.
