According to Dreyer 1988, a new yachts ensign to replace the Republican one was introduced in 1938/1939. This was a red-yellow-red 1+2+1 flag with in the middle of the yellow stripe an open royal crown (described in the 1938 decree about the new coat-of-arms as a coronel or coronet) in yellow, contoured in black and with a red cap. I guess that the uncertain date of adoption is due to the fact that this coronet was first used in the new 1938 arms but the yacht ensign was first illustrated in a 1939 Spanish navy flag book.
