Flagmaster no 4, Winter 1971, has an article about the flags of the capital cities of Europe. It states the flag of Helsinki was adopted or used for the first time in 1967 for an exhibition.
Pascal Vagnat, 12 November 1999

The flag is a banner of the arms, and the arms of Helsinki is older than 1967, the crown in the flag should really be yellow (as it is golden (or) in the arms) and the base should be white, not grey (it is silver (argent) in the arms).

The name of Helsinki in Swedish is Helsingfors. About 7.5 % of the city's population has Swedish as their first language.

Helsinki was founded in 1550 and became the capital of Finland in 1812 (before this, the most important city in Finland had been Turku (in Swedish: Åbo)).
