The department is named after the river Seine (776 km),
tributary of English Channel.
It was formerly named Seine-Inférieure (Lower-Seine),
and was renamed Seine-Maritime (Coastal-Seine) because
Inférieure was regarded as derogatory by the
inhabitants of the department.
