Presentation of Toulon

Toulon is the prefecture of Var departement (since 1974), on the Mediterranean sea. Toulon is the capital city of a Maritime Region with an important Navy base. Agglomeration hasmore than 400,000 inhabitants. Toulon is the ome city of the famous Provencal actor Raimu and the lyric artist Mayol (author of the unforgottable hit Viens Poupoule).
Toulon is also known for the siege of 1793, when Dugommier seized the city which had been given up to the Brits by French Royalists. A young artillery Captain became famous for his sense of strategy and the seizure of the'little Gibraltar' on 19 December. His name was Napoléon Bonaparte.
On 27 November 1942, the French Navy scuttled in the bay to avoid being caught by the Nazis. The city was liberated on 26 August 1944 following the Provence landing (15 August 1944)
