The first arms (1173) of the archbishopric of Dol were red with lozenges of ermine. Later, those arms were changed for a blazon quartered argent and gules (white and red), similar to the arms of the Breton city of Combourg. The new flag combines elements of both blazons: it is quartered white and red, with three black ermines placed 2 + 1 in each white quarter, recalling the arms and flag of the city of Dol.
The flag was created by Yoran Delacour (1996).and was approved by the Breton Vexillological Society.
