The Société Nationale Maritime Corse-Méditerranée (SNCM) was founded in 1976 to replace the Compagnie Générale Transméditerranéenne.
The main duty of the SNCM was a mission of public service to provide a "territorial
continuity" between Corsica and mainland. The SNCM signed with the
French state a 25-year convention.
On 1 January 2002, a new conventon was signed by the SNCM and the Compagnie Méridionale de Navigation. This was a convention of delegation of public service signed
for five years with the Territorial Collectivity of Corsica (local
administration) and the Transport Office of Corsica, approved by the
Territorial Assembly of Corsica (local parliament).
The SNCM operates seven passenger ferries under the commercial name Ferryte
