Worms & Cie was founded in 1848 for the importation of English coal to France. The Worms fleet was launched in 1858. In 1869, the Suez canal was inaugurated, and Worms opened an office in Port-Said. The company built its shipyard in Le Trait (Normandy).
The company developed all kind of shipping activities during the XXth century. At the same time, Worms became an international merchant bank and business group. The shipping company was renamed Compagnie Navale Worms in 1971.
In 1986, Worms merged Compagnie Navale Worms and Compagnie Nationale de Navigation, bought to the oil group Elf. The new company kept the name of Compagnie Nationale de Navigation. In 1998, Worms ceded 54.4% of the shares of the company to Compagnie Maritime Belge holding.

The flag of Worms & Cie, as shown by several sources, is blue with a white disc. I don't know if Compagnie Nationale de Navigation kept this houseflag.
