The region called Mani is divided between the districts of Lakonia and Messinia in the southern Peloponnesos.
Chris Orfanakos, 20 December 2002
The flag of Mani was adopted by the local war chiefs during the Greek war of independance (1821-1829). Its design is a blue cross in the middle of a standard rectangle shaped flag with a white background. Underneath the cross there are three words writen in black, Niki H Thanatos (Victory Or Death). This is not the ordinary nationalist "freedom or death" motto, since people in Mani were autonomous during the Ottoman era.
The flag is widely used even today, It flies over many towns in the Mani area.
