Introduction

Since Guatemala was until 1987 a militarised country than until then it's military divisions have their own flags.
Jaume Ollé, 16 December 1996

Guatemala is divided today into 22 departamentos (departments could be a word to call them) and they all have their own flag which is raised along with the country flag. I don't know where you got those flags that are supposed to be from the military regions but even the military zones have a different flag and all of them have the legend REPUBLICA DE GUATEMALA (Republic of Guatemala) above the shield. This shield is the same used in the national flag and just below the shield is the number of each military zone.
Jose Herrera, 10 October 1998
