Overview

Tomislav Šipekhas discovered another Croatian municipal flag at <www.veliki-grdjevac.hr> (photo at <www.veliki-grdjevac.hr/20004.jpg>). Veliki Grđevac (Veliki Grdjevac) is a community in the Bjelovar- Bilogora County, population 4,500, some 1,500 in the village of the same name. It is located about 20 km southeast of Bjelovar. The place is probably most well known as the birth place of one of the greatest Croatian writers for childern and youth Mato Lovrak. He was also briefly a teacher in the lcoal school. The coat of arms of Veliki Grdevac is: azure a marten or (At least I think it is a marten, but maybe it is an other animal?) holding in its mouth a fish argent standing on a mill wheel of the last. The mill wheel may probably be explained also with help of Mato Lovrak - namely in one of his most sucsessful books ("Družba Pere Kvržice") a mill plays an important role. The community actually restores some old mill, now named after the book. The flag is light blue with the coat of arms in the middle. It is not clear from the photo if the coat of arms is indeed bordered golden, but I have put it there according to "my feeling" to be proved right or wrong at some latter time.
