Overview

C<avle (Cavle) is a community just north-east of Rijeka with about 6500 inhabitants. It includes the old fort of Grobnik and Grobnicko polje (Grobnik field) that is pictured in the 18th century Rijeka County coat of arms as well as in the current coat of arms of the Coast and Gorski Kotar County, with the snow-capped mountain Platak behind it.  The name Cavle has a similar sound to the word for spike/nail, but whether this has to do with the spike mace in the coat of arms I am not sure. In any case, the sword and spiked mace are already shown in the 1786 quarter of the mentioned county coat of arms above the landscape of Grobnik, and no doubt these two are connected. Grobnik field is today most well know for a automotodrome.
The coat of arms is: Gules, a Spiked Mace and a Sabre in saltire both Argent hilted Or.
The Cavle web site I visited in 1997 (now on <www.geocities.com/Baja/Trails/8020/baza.html>; this was one of the first community sites on-line that showed coat of arms, at least the one I found among the few with vexi-heraldical contents at the early
days) show the coat of arms as blazoned above, but Oštric [osg02] showes it slightly
