Petrinja is a city in Sisak-Moslavina County some 10 km SW of
Sisak on confluence of Petrinjcica into Kupa, 13700 inh (2001).
Probably most well know for its over 150 years old meat industry
Gavrilovic (salami!). Early developed industry enabled the city
to became important cultural center of the wider region. The city
is mentioned in 1240 as important fort. Since 1531 to 1543
neverending battele was fought for Petrinja between Croats and
Ottomans. Finally in 1543 after the decision of the Croatian
Parliament, the defenders burth tehir city and retreated. Turks
made their stronghold here, but already in 1593 in the huge
battle at Sisak their power was diminished and Ottoman way to
Europe was ended. In 18th century, Petrinja as one of the main
cities in the Military Border is center of cultural life
(military school, public schools, pedagogic academy). The city
was separated from Croatia in Serb rebelion in early 1990's, and
much destroyed. It was liberated in 1995.
It seems that the modern coat of arms is not yet adopted and two
concurrent designs are more or less widely used, differing in the
colouration of the field: Gules a Gates embatteled portculis
rised Or with two round Towers Argent roofed Gules and in chief
holding the towertops an Eagle displayed Sable crowned beaked and
membered Or and langued Gules. The other version has the field
"per pale gules and argent". Both versions are also
reported being used on blue flag.
In the county official gazette (<www.glasila.hr>) one can
find: Zakljucak o primanju na znanje Izvjeca o grbu i
zastavi Grada Petrinje, 19.07.2000, Slubeni vjesnik br.
9/00 (Conclusion on reception of the Report on the coat of arms
and the flag of the City of Petrinja).
The document only notes that the commity for the adoption of the
symbols presented a report to the civic assemby and that the
report was adopted. The details of the report are not published
in the gazette. Anyhow, this is indicative that the process of
the adopton of the symbols is still going on and is possibly
reaching its final stage.

The decision on the flag and the coat of arms was not yet reached, and as far as I was able to find out that issue has political background. However, recently (in 2003) it has been practice of showing an other design, that has, in my opinion, little chance to be approved by the Ministry: white flag with two rows of red and white cheques along both the top and bottom ed
