Modena Dukedom

Pre-1830 Flag

Ducal Standart

by Jaume Olle', 25 October 1998

I believe that the Ducal standart in blue with white crowned eagle. Pictured in Vexilla Italica is another version of this flag.

Maritime Ensign

by Jaume Olle', 25 October 1998

Modena first existence under Este dinasty was from 1288 and until 1797, and it existed again after a french rule between 1814 and 1829. The flag was blue with white eagle, and crown above the eagle head. Here is the same flag without crown as the maritime ensign. In old plates you can see the crown but with less detail. New flag was adopted 1830. Red-white-red horizontal and in center blue-white-blue vertical. Arms added in national flag and no added in mercantile ensing.

The cover of [sie63] shows what the book describes as approximately a quarter of a flagchart, one of many to roll of the, mostly Dutch, presses for the use of seafarers: "Tableau des Pavillons que la Plupart des Nations arborent a` la Mer. Faitau de'po^t des cartes et plans de la marine pour le service des vaisseaux du Roy par ordre de M. de Machault, Garde de se'aux de France. Par le Sr. Bellin Inge'nieur de la marine. 1756." [bel56]
On the 3rd row from the bottom there is - "Pav. de Modene" - A blue flag with a white eagle beaked blue, outstretched wings arcing slightly upward. [The blue beak may well be a colouring error since the eagle's head is coloured blue further than you'd expect the beak to go.]
