The fleur-de-lys ("giglio") is the symbol of the city since its foundation (ca. 1000), maybe to establish a connection with its Roman name, FLORENTIA. In 1251 the Ghibellins, former rulers in exile, have united under this ensign.

The victorious Guelfs wanted to show their distance from the defeated Ghibellins, therefore inverted the colours, which perdured till nowadays.

About Florence Republic, it was reported about a traditional flag: white and red vertical. People flag (Bandiera di Popoli) was white with red cross. The first reported City flag was red with white lys. Later is reported white with red lys. The republic used red flag with white cross. This is the Medici dinasty (1550-1749) white flag with shield
