Combination of brilliant green stylized Hiragana character of To (ト)
of Toyama and shape of Mt. Tateyama (very famous mountain in Toyama) on white
field. Brilliant green is prefecture colour symbolizing Toyama's plenty of
nature and vitality for future. Adopted 1 January 1989.
Nozomi Kariyasu, 6 May 1998
The emblem was adopted in 1963 on occasion of tercentenary of the city, the
flag was adopted on the same time. Ratio 2:3, vertical size of emblem 2/3 of the
hoist. The emblem is stylization of the Japanese character 'to' (ト)
standing both for the city and the prefecture. The two "horns" are
also representing the thriving towards better future. The dark red colour of the
field is reference to cherry fruit revered in the city (and Japanese culture in
general) and is considered traditional colour of the city (the busses are
coloured in the same shade too).
