In 1907, Nagano city conducted a study to find an appropriate symbol for the city. In October, 1907, the "Maruhachi" (circle 8) symbol was
selected by the city assembly. This symbol reportedly was used by the Owari Tokugawa clan. The symbol has been included on the city flag.
