The character pronounced "Mi" consists of three equal length
horizontal strokes, one over the other. Here, they are offset and given enough
breadth that they have a pleasing appearance. By the way, the green of the
background is "midori", also with the same first character.

Prefectural flag
The green and yellow colors represent the prefecture's abundant greenery and sunshine. The three horizontal strokes represent the katakana syllable "mi" the first syllable of Miyazaki. They also resemble a staircase, symbolizing progress.
