Overview

I received a letter from Mrs. Giedre Bartuseviciute, superior specialist of the Department of Regional Development, Kaunas County Governor's Administration. She sent me pictures and descriptions of the flag and coat of arms of Kaunas County. She wrote: “Coat of arms of Kaunas County was designed by artist Rolandas Rimkunas. It was created the flag and the seal according to the arms. Heraldic Commission to the President of the Republic of Lithuania recommends that the coat of arms of district (center of county) would be used in arms of county. But Kaunas district hasn’t its own coat of arms yet. So it was used the coat of arms of Kaunas City. It was chosen wild ox’s head because city and county can’t have same coat of arms. The shield of the arms has azure border charged with ten golden double crosses. A number of crosses show a quantity of counties in present Lithuania and golden crosses in the field of azure point to subordination of counties to State administration… Relationship of the width to the length is 1:1.2.”
The coat of arms of Kaunas County was confirmed by the President of the Republic of Lithuania on July 16, 2003.
