Status of the flag

This flag of the FLNKS (New Caledonia/Kanaky) is unofficial, but the status of autonomy given in 1984 allowed New Caledonia to have emblems distinct of the emblems of France.
Pascal Vagnat 14 December 1995

The flag was adopted at the first congress of the FLNKS at the beginning of the 1980's.
Pascal Vagnat, 31 May 1996

Meaning of the flag

The golden disc represents the sun on which is inscribed the roof of a traditional house with a "flèche faitière" (an arrow for roof) and a "tutut". This "tutut" is a marine shell.

The green of the flag symbolizes the land of the ancestors, the soil, the country. The red symbolizes the blood given in the struggle for independence, socialism, and the unity of the Kanak people. The blue symbolizes the sky and the surrounding ocean, the sovereignty in the Pacific Ocean of the Kanak people.
