Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 30.589; area: 58,00 km². Settlements:
Meppel (seat), Broekhuizen, De Kolk (part), Havelterberg (part), Havixhorst,
Kolderveen, Kolderveense Bovenboer, Lindenhorst, Nijentap, Nijeveen, Nijeveense
Bovenboer, Rogat, Schiphorst.
Meppel in southwest Drenthe used to have the best coffee along the
Amsterdam-Groningen railroad. The municipality consists of the former municipalities
of Meppel and Nijeveen.

elements of the flags of the old municipalities of Meppel and Nijeveen.
