Appingedam municipality

Appingedam has 12.500 inhabitants on 2436 hectares, and consists of Appingedam town (seat), Garreweer, Jukwerd, Laskwerd, Marsum, Oling, Opwierde, Solwerd and Tjamsweer. Appingedam is in northeast Groningen, just a few km. west of the gigantic project of Eemsmond. It is an old town, locally better known as 'Den Dam', on the 'Damsterdiep', an old canal between the Dollard bay and Groningen city. In olden times is was the capital of the region 'Fivelgo'.
The old flag (according to Sierksma, Nederlands vlaggenboek, 1962) was horizontal green - white, and unofficial.
The present flag was adopted 23 Jul 1964.
