Swentibold was the bastard son of Arnulf of Carinthia, who was king of Eastern Francia 887-899, as successor of Karel de Dikke; Arnulf wanted to rule over Lorraine and Northern Italy; he was crowned emperor by Pope Formosus on 2 Feb 896, the last emperor of the Carolingian dynasty. Vikings in Leuven (be, 891).
Swentibold (or Zwentibold) (871-900) was appointed by his dad King of Lorraine (a kingdom especially created for him); he married in 879 (!) Ota, daughter of Count Otto; he died while fighting his main vassals.

The flag of Susteren is: three equally wide horizontal stripes of blue and white, with at the hoist over all a yellow lion with red tong and nails, and at the center of the fly of the white stripe two connected blue lozenges. This flag was adopted 27 Aug 1984.
