Shipmate Flagchart : http://www.shipmate.nl/flags.htm
never officially adopted
Despite the fact that Goes is the Hanzestad it was never a member of
the Hanseatic League. The popular etymology of the name Goes is that it
stands for a "goes" = goose. The Zeeuwen (inhabitants of
Zeeland) tend to pronounce the *g* as an *h*, hence "Ganzenstad"
becomes "Hanzestad".
The flag of Goes city, now of Goes municipality, consists of thirteen
equally wide horizontal stripes of red and white. The first known image
is in the "Chronyk van Mattheus Smallegange", according to Sierksma's Nederlands
Vlaggenboek (1962). [sie62]
