Goes municipality

Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 36.285; area: 102,13 km². Settlements: Goes (seat), 's-Heer Arendskerke, 's-Heer Hendrikskinderen, Kattendijke, Kloetinge, Oud-Sabbinge, Wilhelminadorp, Wolphaartsdijk. On 1 Jan 1970 the municipalities of Goes, ’s-Heer Arendskerke, Kattendijke, Kloetinge en Wolphaartsdijk merged to form the new municipality of Goes.

Despite the fact that Goes is the Hanzestad it was never a member of the Hanseatic League. The popular etymology of the name Goes is that it stands for a "goes" = goose. The Zeeuwen (inhabitants of Zeeland) tend to pronounce the *g* as an *h*, hence "Ganzenstad" becomes "Hanzestad".
The flag of Goes city, now of Goes municipality, consists of thirteen equally wide horizontal stripes of red and white. The first known image is in the "Chronyk van Mattheus Smallegange", according to Sierksma's Nederlands Vlaggenboek (1962). [sie62]
