The CoA of Alphen aan den Rijn consists of a black 8-pointed star on a white shield. On top of the shield is a golden crown. The shield is supported by two golden lions. The arms were originally of the van Alphen-family, a branch of the van Kralingen-family. Dirk van Cralingen (born before 1189) owned estates in the vicinity of Alphen en had his name changed into "Van Alphen". In the 17th century Alphen florished: it became a resting place for post-riders and mercantile travel over land and water.
