Number of inhabitants: 12.760; area: 68,47 km². Settlements: Abbenbroek
(seat), Biert, Geervliet, Heenvliet, Oudenhoorn, Simonshaven, Zuidland.
Bernisse municipality was formed on 1 Jan 1980 by the merger of Abbenbroek,
Oudenhoorn en Zuidland and parts of the municipalities of Geervliet (incl.
Simonshaven) and Heenvliet. The name refers to the old river of Bernisse
(also known as Bornisse or Pernis) separating the islands of Voorne and
Putten.
Flag adopted 15 Aug 1988. The crosses symbolize the villages of Abbenbroek,
Heenvliet, Oudenhoorn and Zuidland on the island of Voorne, and the villages
of Geervliet and Simonshaven on the island of Putten.
