Bommelse Gors

[Bommelse Gors burgee] by Jarig Bakker, 1 Dec 2004

Watersportvereniging Het Bommelse Gors, Den Bommel, Oostflakkee municipality, Zuid-Holland province, after image on this website: yellow burgee charged with Heer Bommel. Heer Olivier B. Bommel is the main character in Maarten Toonder's "Tom Poes"- comic-series, a big brown bear, who considers himself to be a "Heer van Stand" (lord with standing). He was first
painted white, as on the Bommel-burgee, later on he became himself and brown again. He experienced thousands of exciting adventures, much to the delight of the little readers of the NRC, the Nieuwe Rommeldamsche Courant.
Den Bommel is a sleepy old town, which was visited in 1964 by some rowdy Leiden students, who placed a small statue of Heer Bommel in the center of the town. In 1997 the municipal council replaced it with a bronze statue.
