It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms
centered on a background gyronny (meaning city
rank) of red and yellow. The coat of arms is sable a cork oak vert glaned
and decorked gules flanked by to bombs or exploding gules and or. Mural crown
argent with five visible towers (city rank) and
white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CIDADE DE VENDAS
NOVAS".
António Martins, 19 Nov 2003
The toponym "vendas novas" means something like "new sellyards", but
the arms allude to something different: the local importance
of cork extraction and the large local artillery
facility.
