Overview

Salonta (in Hungarian Nagyszalonta) is a town in Bihor (in Hungarian Bihar) County of Romania close to the Hungarian border. The commune contains only the town. The town has got 20.660 inhabitants (61,1% Hungarians, 1992 census). Neighbouring communities are: Chiumeghiu / Illye, Bătar, Tulca and Mădăraş communities in Romania, Geszt, Mezőgyán, Újszalonta (before 1920 part of the town), Méhkerék / Micherechi and Kötegyán villages in Hungary.

The first mention of the settlement is from 1332 when it was a parish. Salonta was part of the Bihar County of the Kingdom of Hungary until 1556. 1556-1598 (with Bihar Co.) was part of the semi-independent Principality of Transylvania. 1598-1606 its destroyed and devastated (by Turks) territory was part of Hungary ruled by the Habsburgs. After the Bocskai's Uprising the settlemet resettled with Hajdus (free soldiers) by Prince Bocskai and became a Free Hajdu Town in Bihar County of the Principality of Transylvania.
