Overview

Şimleu Silvaniei (in Hungarian Szilágysomlyó) is a town in Salaj (in Hungarian Szilágy) County of Romania 30 km west from Zalău City. The commune contains four settlements: Town of Şimleu Silvaniei / Szilágysomlyó, Bic, Cehei and Pusta villages. The town has got 15.233 inhabitants (32,1% Hungarians, 1992 census). Neighbouring communities are: Maerişte, Ip / Ipp, Nuşfalău / Szilágynagyfalu, Crasna / Kraszna, Pericei / Szilágyperecsen and Şărmăşag / Sarmaság communities.

The territory of the town is inhabited from ages. A great Roman gold treasure trove was excavated in the territory of the town in 1797. In 1889 there was excavated a gold treasure trove of a Gepida prince. Somlyó was part of the Kraszna County of the Kingdom of Hungary to 1538. 1538-1552 was part of the semi-independent Principality of Transylvania ruled by King János I. 1552-1570 was in Hungary ruled by the Habsburgs. The Treaty of Speyer in 1570 allocated it to the Principality of Transylvania with some counties (Partium Regni Hungariae in Hungarian 'Részek' means 'Parts'). In 1862 Szilágysomlyó was reallocated to Hungary. Capital of Kraszna County to 1876.

1876-1918 the settlement was a town in Szilágy County of the Kingdom of Hungary. Inhabitants in 1910: 6.885; 6.030 (87,6%) Hungarian, 759 (11,0%) Rumanian and 96 (1,4%) other by mother tongue, 2.240 (32,5%) Roman Catholic, 1.880 (27,3%) Calvinist, 1.440.(20,9%) Jew, 1.288 (18,7%) Greek Catholic and 37 (0,5%) other by religion. From 1918/1920 (Romanian occupation / Treaty of Trianon) to 1940 (Second Decision in Vienna) part of the Kingdom of Romania.1940-1944 part of Hungary. The Treaty of Paris reallocated it to Romania.The settlement was a town 1952-1960 in Oradea Region, 1960-1968 in Crişana Region and from 1968 is in Salăj County
