Nitra flag

Nitra is 100 km east of Bratislava with c. 90.000 inhabitants. Nitra castle existed already in the third decade of the 9th century as the seat of the Pribina princes. The first Christian church on Slovakian soil was in the castle precincts. In 1025 Nitra became the seat of the crown prince of Hungary. It was granted town privileges in 1248. In the 16th and 17th it suffered greatly from constant attacks by the Turks.

Nitra Coat of Arms

Nitra Coat of Arms from http://www.tatrahome.sk/revue/erby/ . (!Link does not work any more!)

The arms are known from 15th century seals of the city. The cross on the banner is the cross of Hungary, indicating that the banner may date from the late 13th century.
