Prievidza (Hungarian: Privigye; German: Priwitz) has 53.424 inhabitants (1990 census). The town was in Nyitra (Slovakian: Nitra) County of the Kingdom of Hungary to 1918/1920 (Declaration of Martin). 1920-1938 in Czechoslovakia, 1939-1945 in Slovakia, and 1945-1992 inf Czechoslovakia. A city since 1383; there were gold mines. The city is the center of coal-mines.
