N.V. Scheepvaart Maatschappij Suriname

by Jarig Bakker, 31 January 2001

The magazine 'De Blauwe Wimpel' (a monthly for shipping and shipbuilding) of April 1956 contains a flagchart, entitled: "Kaart van de maatschappijvlaggen en schoorsteenmerken der 51 bij de Koninklijke Nederlandsche Reedersvereeniging aangesloten rederijen." That is: Chart of Houseflags and Funnelmarkings of the 51 shipping companies who are members of the Royal Dutch Shipowners Society.
Here is N.V. Scheepvaart Maatschappij Suriname, Paramaribo. This looks like a filial of the Vereenigde Nederlandse Scheepvaartmaatschappij, Den Haag.

N.V. Scheepsvaart Maatschappij Suriname. Suriname was of course under Dutch control when it was formed with addresses in both countries though by the later 1950s only that of Suriname appears in Lloyds. This would appear to be a follow on from the independence of Suriname which resulted that year and the result was a change of the blue to green in a new flag which is shown by Brown 1995. The Brown version also shows minor differences in that the orange and white bands are shown as narrower but this may have no significance. I find no support for any relationship with Veerenigde Nederlandsche Scheepvaartmaatschappij with the incorporation of a diagonal triban
