MARYSVILLE -- Yuba County ran its flag design contest up the pole but no one saluted it, officials said Tuesday. Not a single entry was received by the Friday deadline for the six-week competition, county Economic Development Coordinator John Fleming said. "Yuba County residents apparently have no burning desire or interest in having a flag," Fleming concluded.
Established in 1850, Yuba County has never had a banner, but this year a county supervisor suggested it ought to create one, especially since Forbes magazine rated the Yuba-Sutter area one of the "best rural places to do business" in 2000. The contest -- dubbed "Run It Up the Flagpole" -- was announced in September, with eligibility limited to Yuba County residents. "I begged and pleaded with the supervisors to let people from elsewhere enter, but they wouldn't," Fleming said. Press releases went to the media. Schools were alerted. A notice was placed on the county Web site. A placard soliciting entries was displayed at the county
library. "I received numerous requests for information from out of the area, but when the deadline closed I hadn't received a single entry," Fleming said.
