Jasper County flag to be unveiled, unfurled: Ceremony to mark county’s 160th birthday
By Susan Redden, Globe Staff Writer

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Jasper County has a county flag that will be unveiled, and unfurled, at the county’s 160th birthday celebration later this month. Plans for a county flag started years ago, and the County Commission in December spent $1,400 to order 12 flags. The red, white and blue flag has the county courthouse as a centerpiece, surrounded by 15 stars representing the county’s 15 townships; below it is the year 1841, when the county was founded.

The commission started work on the new flag more than two years ago at the suggestion of Marjorie Bull, then county clerk. “She had said for years that the county should have a flag to commemorate its history,” said Anna Ruth Crampton, Western District commissioner. The work started with a request that students in Jasper County schools, during the 1998-99 school year, submit suggested designs for the flag. Responses came from only one group, sixth- and seventh-grade students of Pamela Paige at the Joplin Junior High School gifted center. Designs from those students were passed on to Carthage artist Andy Thomas. “The design is a combination of input from a number of people,” said Danny Hensley, presiding commissioner. “Steve Weldon (county archivist) also helped. We ended up with several designs, and county officials voted on them.”

Flags will be flown at six county buildings. Four are in Carthage: the courthouse; the jail and sheriff’s office; the annex building that contains the health department and records center; and the annex building shared with Bank of America. The others are in Joplin: the county courts building and the juvenile detention center. Twelve flags were purchased as the minimum order, Crampton said. Additional flags, if needed, will cost about $80 each. Jasper County joins Joplin, which adopted its own city flag several years ago.
