The shield was a component of the arms of the Leeward
Islands. In 1960 a motto was added to the shield, to make
the arms of the Virgin Islands. Between 1956, when
the federation of the Leeward Islands was dissolved, and 1960
when the arms of the Virgin Islands were granted, some flags may
have been produced with the shield but no motto.
