Description of the flag

Serbia (People's Republic of, Narodna Republika Srbijauntil 1963; then Socialist Republic, Socijalistička Republika Srbija until 1991) used a red-blue-white flag with a star, officially adopted on 17 January 1947.
The Serbian tricolour dates from 1835, and is based on the Russian colours.

The traditional shield of arms of Serbia (without the cross) above rising sun with cog wheel, surrounded with golden wreath of maize and oak leaves. Red ribbon with dates 1804 and 1941. Above golden outlined red star.
The religious emblem - cross - was removed because of ideological reasons (atheistic Socialism). The years refer to the first Serbian uprising agains Turks and national uprising against Axis powers in Second World War, respectively.

The emblem was probably adopted in the same time as the flag, on 17 January1947, and it is supposed that it was designed by Djordje Andrejević-Kun, also supposed to be the designer of all Yugoslav emblems of that time.

Autonomous regions of Vojvodina and Kosovo

The two Autonomous Regions of Vojvodina and Kosovo had no flag, but used the Serbian one, since they were legally parts of the Serbian Republic.
