Description of the flag

Blankenberge (17,000 inhabitants) is located in the arrondissement of Bruges. It is an important bathing resort on the North Sea coast.

The flag is: Sable, a pale Argent, in escutcheon Sable, a fess Argent, in the foot three dunes Argent. Proportions are 2:3 and 1:2:1 for the pale.

The flag is derived from the municipal arms, described as follows:

"The arms were granted by Royal Decree on January 9, 1841. The base of the shield shows three canting mountains (Blankenberge means white/clear-mountains). The meaning of the silver bar in a black field is not known, it may be derived from the important dynasty of Van Borssele. The oldest seal of the city, known from 1330, shows above a fish a white rock in a sea. A second seal, known since 1542 shows the same composition, but with two stars above the rock. The present arms were first mentioned in 1697."

The flag was adopted on 13 October 1987.
