Description of the flag

Zwevegem (23,000 inhabitants) is located in the arrondissement of Kortrijk.

The flag is: Quartered, I and III Azure, semy of blocks Or, lion rampant Or, tongued and armed Gules, II and IV Gules, a fess Argent. Proportions are 2:3, and in II and IV 3:2:3.

This flag is a banner of the municipal arms, which are described as follows:

"The old arms are based on the arms of the Griboval family, who used three silver stars on a black field. The Griboval family ruled the estate of Zwevegem in the 16th century.
The new arms were designed as the old arms only represented Zwevegem village and did not show the proper arms of the Griboval family. Instead the arms of the last Lords of Zwevegem, the Counts of Nassau-Corroy were chosen as the new arms. These arms combine the lion of Nassau, with the silver bar of Vianden. The supporters and crown were also derived from the arms of the Counts."

The flag was adopted on 17 April 1990.
