Description of the flag

Boussu (22,000 inhabitants) is located in the arrondissement of Mons.

The flag is: Gules, bend Or. Proportions are 2:3.

The flag is based on the municipal arms, which are described as follows:

"The arms were granted on May 19, 1913 and are officially crowned with a crown with 12 pearls. The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the village, known since 1574. The seal showed a shield with a bend. The shield is the coat of arms from the Hénin-Liétard family. The family acquired the estate of Boussu around 1200 and the family remained in possession of Boussu until 1804."

The former name of the French city of Hénin-Beaumont, located in the departement of Nord, not far from the Belgian border, was Hénin-Liétard, probably related to the same family.

The flag was adopted on 6 January 1992.
