This flag is an interesting (and unusual) combination of Islamic and Christian symbols (Crescent moon with star, although the eight pointed star is not usual among Islamic symbols, surrounded by four crosses formee).  Any idea what the background story could be?

It may have the same origin as Dokkum (Fryslân, The Netherlands): a reminder of the Crusades; the town of Varnsdorf in
Czechia has a white crescent and star on its CoA and flag as well, possibly derived from an old family's CoA.
