Description of the flag

Houthalen-Helchteren is located in the arrondissement of Maaseik.

The flag of Houthalen-Helchteren is horizontally divided red-yellow-green.

The flag was adopted by the Municipal council on 23 June 1992 and approved on 6 October 1992 by the Flemish Minister of Culture Hugo Weckx (Belgisch Staatsblad/Moniteur Belge, 21 June 1994)

Red and yellow are the colours of the ancient county of Loon. The green stripe represents the green recreation resorts for which Houthalen-Helchteren is known.
The Loon arms are now the escutcheon on the Belgian Limburg lion's breast.
